Farming
Compos Mentis apprentices and volunteers practice organic farming in a half-acre vegetable garden and a perennial herb and flower garden. They raise chickens for eggs and take care of pet rabbits. In addition to growing produce, apprentices have a chance to learn woodlot management and agro-forestry, including cultivation of mushrooms and herbs. We intend to introduce bee-keeping in 2008, too. Enjoying the wooded trails of Cayuga Nature Center and the open fields above the farm are also popular outdoor activities.

Group Discussions
There is ample time for casual conversation and structured discussions, recreation, and challenging new activities that range from food preparation and storage to painting and work on computers. One day a week is devoted to a formal discussion of mental health concerns—good health practices, the need for proper nutrition, sleep, rest, and plenty of fun, the value of honesty with family members, friends, colleagues, and medical professionals.
