Criteria
Compos Mentis welcomes adults who have been diagnosed with a mental illness and are willing to work toward feeling well. Criteria for consideration are:

  • Adults 18 years and older
  • Diagnosis of schizophrenia, schizo-affective disorder, bipolar disorder, depression, Asperger’s
  • Willing and able to participate in program activities
  • Relative(s) or a close friend are willing to participate
  • Must see a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse on their own while a part of Compos Mentis
  • Must honor decisions made in consultation with that mental health
    professional, especially as regards medicine and other forms of
    therapy
  • Not actively suicidal or at risk of harming others, not exhibiting severe antisocial behavior
  • Able to work on an open, rural property and respect the property rights of neighbors

No one will be admitted to the program who has a strong potential for uncontrolled aggression, an active substance abuse problem, a history of recurrent suicide attempts, a history of sexual predation, or symptoms so severe that they intrude on the ability to participate.

The use of medicine is not required, but it is strongly advised for its ability to minimize symptoms and allow other important work to be done. Apprentices are required to work with a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse and with a therapist on their own, at their own expense. Compos Mentis is not a treatment facility. No one on staff will diagnose illness, prescribe medicine, dispense it, or engage in activities commonly thought of as therapy. >> see applications forms on the next page
