Because of the modest size of our staff, we are unable to accommodate those who have a strong potential for uncontrolled verbal or physical aggression, an active substance abuse problem, a history of recurrent suicide attempts or other self harm, a history of sexual misconduct or symptoms so severe as to make it impossible to participate in the program.

Application Procedure

Criteria

Compos Mentis is a program for adults who are receiving treatment for a mental illness, are compliant with the recommendations of their treatment providers and are interested in learning to live in a healthy way with their illnesses. Rather than providing treatment, we are an adjunct to it and therefore do not diagnose, prescribe medication nor dispense it. Below are some of our admissions considerations:

Adults 18 and over
Diagnoses such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar and other mood disorders, anxiety disorders and autism spectrum disorders
Willing and able to participate in program activities
In treatment with a psychiatrist, psychiatric nurse and possibly in psychotherapy with a licensed professional such as a psychologist or social worker
In compliance with the recommendations of treatment providers
Not actively suicidal or at risk of harming oneself or others
Able to to respect the members of the Compos Mentis community and its neighbors
